Action packed school holidays in North Shore City June 21, 2007 School holidays start on June 30 and there’s heaps of holiday fun to be had in North Shore City.

The council-supported holiday programmes begin on Monday, July 2 and continue right through to Friday, July 13. North Shore Leisure programmes provide high-energy, creative and educational activities, in a safe environment with enthusiastic, trained staff.

These are run out of three handy council-operated facilities at ActivZone Sports Arena in Glenfield plus the Birkenhead and East Coast Bays leisure centres. Take part in a treasure hunt and rock climbing, visit Kelly Tarltons, Auckland Zoo, the Star Dome and prepare for an extreme adrenalin rush at Rainbow’s End.

Leisure centre activities are suitable for children aged five to 12 years at minimal cost. There is also after-programme care available for those with working parents. School holidays at North Shore Libraries are all about things that go. Come to Albany Village Library and see things that go cha cha and make your own musical instrument.

Things that go zoom are at Birkenhead Library, come and make a cardboard aeroplane and watch it fly. Meet local author, Peter Millett at East Coast Bays Library and add your personal touch to the fairytale mural. Highbury House in Birkenhead is running card-making classes on Tuesday, July 10 and Wednesday, July 11, from 10am to 1pm. Come and learn different techniques to make your cards more special.

The course is $30 for two days and includes lunch and materials. Don’t forget to bring your own scissors and ruler. Bays Community Centre offer’s practical programmes these holidays.

Come and learn how to make muffins and Chelsea buns, take a course in babysitting or learn self defence under the guidance of Jan Scott, a qualified Hupkwondo instructor. Activities at the council’s community houses are run by North Shore’s six community co-ordinators.

They not only offer fun activities, but help groups and individuals access resources, develop initiatives and deliver programmes for the benefit of the community. Young people can even take an art class these holidays with the Mairangi Arts Centre. Classes range from painting, clay, drawing, mosaics and sculpture.

There is a morning session from 10am to midday and an afternoon session from 1pm to 3pm. Come and enjoy a day at the Beach Haven Sports Centre. Take part in the American, carnival and sports-themed days, a cooking morning and you can even make your own puppet to take home.
