It’s easy to recycle your old mobile phone and computer equipment

Manukau residents can now easily recycle their old mobile phones by taking them to a library, recreation centre or council customer centre.

Manukau people also have the opportunity to recycle their old computer equipment this Sunday at e-Day being held at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre from 10am – 2pm.

Manukau City Council is working with Vodafone on the mobile phone recycling service, which will see drop off boxes rotated around the centres.
Mobile phones and accessories of any make, model or service provider will be accepted at no charge.

Manukau City Council Senior Policy Analyst, Waste, Patricia Facenfield says the aim is to make sure phones and computers don’t end up in a landfill and to raise community awareness about the environmental risks of e-waste.

“As people buy new phones they face the problem of getting rid of their old ones safely. This makes it easy and people can be safe in the knowledge that their phone will be recycled.

“We’re facing a challenge to make sure e-waste doesn’t get dumped in landfills, it’s important because of the potential toxic effect on the environment.

“Manukau City Council is keen to make it as easy as possible for people to recycle more by promoting these type of initiatives,” Ms Facenfield says.
