The House That JG Built

News Release

24th October 2007

The House That JG Built

The keys to a house built entirely by voluntary donations will be handed over to an Auckland regional charity on Friday morning (7.30 am, October 26th). The three-bedroom house in Orewa, worth an estimated $600,000 was built by over 100 tradesmen from local and national businesses in aid of the Hibiscus Coast Hospice.

Organised by leading building company G J Gardner Homes, a range of local and national businesses including PlaceMakers, Plumbing World, Fisher & Paykel, Stevensons and Pink Batts have donated their time, labour and products to the project at no cost.

Hospice Chairman Howard Jury said: ‘This is quite simply one of the most generous donations ever bestowed on this hospice. What makes it so special is the huge number of people involved and that most of them live and work in the local area. It is truly is a gift from the community to the community’.

Ross Morley at G J Gardner explains: ‘The idea of building a house at no cost and selling it with all proceeds going to the hospice was an exciting challenge.

‘It took some doing but, with the house almost complete, I have been bowled over by the support this project has generated in the community.

‘Everyone involved has enjoyed giving something back to the local area. It has been a real team effort’.

The fund raising project was the brainchild of property developers, Leigh Hopper, Ian Boocock and Sir Ross Jansen, who brought the idea to GJ Gardner Homes, Rodney.
