Sir Edmund Hillary will be revered by people the length and breadth of New Zealand, Basil Morrison, President of Local Government New Zealand, said today.

“Our communities have lost a great man, leader of the people, and ambassador for New Zealand.”

“We are honoured that many councils have opened books of condolences to enable everyone to pass on their messages of appreciation of Sir Edmund’s life to his family.”

“On behalf of all mayors, chairs, elected members and their communities, I would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Lady Hillary, and Sir Edmund’s family and friends.”

“We also respect Sir Edmund’s tremendous contribution to New Zealand and his memory will live on in the many public facilities which have been named or supported in his honour,” said Mr Morrison.
