Auckland City Council Media release

Auckland City Council Media release

15 February 2008

Auckland City Council’s Community Services chairperson, Councillor Paul Goldsmith, says the council is relieved that central government has finally realised graffiti is a serious problem.

“Tagging costs Auckland City Council the thick end of $2 million per year,” says Mr Goldsmith.

“Legislative powers to prosecute the vandals concerned have been weak.

“It is encouraging to see these powers are going to be strengthened somewhat by central government, but when you consider a single tagger can cause $10,000 worth of damage, the proposed new fine of $2000 seems pretty light. We will advocate for stronger measures,” says Mr Goldsmith.
