Manukau Rejects Regional Fuel Tax

Manukau Councillor Dick Quax welcomes the rejection by the Manukau City Council of the five cents a litre regional fuel tax as proposed in the Auckland Regional Council’s Draft Annual Plan.

The ARC is calling for submissions on the proposed tax which will be used primarily to buy electric trains.

The Council in its submission originally supported the regional fuel tax but that was overturned on the recommendation of Cr Quax.

“Too many people in Manukau are hurting financially at the moment, said Cr Quax, with food prices rising, mortgage repayment going up an additional tax on the people of Manukau is unacceptable”.

“With petrol having risen 60 cents in just over 12 months and the government’s share getting larger and larger it is time to show leadership and give people some tax relief and I’m grateful the majority of councillors agreed with me”.
