Think You Know Auckland City? Think Again

Auckland urbanites this month get their first dedicated magazine, featuring some revealing secrets of the big little city! Launched today by People Publishing, monthly publication City Central Magazine is uniquely targeted directly at people who live, work and play in the CBD.

Publisher Mike Taillie says: “Our city has been crying out for its own publication. Working in the city is great, it’s exciting, there is variety and something new to see and do every day — there are so many secrets we need to get out to the 80,000 plus people that come in to the city every day to work.”

City Central Magazine celebrates all that is great about working or living in the CBD. Up-to-date information about the best places to eat and shop, as well as the pick of upcoming events, sit next to functional articles such as where to find a doctor, the best parking spots and light-hearted articles such as “Pimp My Cubicle” and “Confessions of a Temp”. There will also be competitions, crosswords and quizzes for workers to do while the boss isn’t looking.

Auckland now joins the ranks of London and New York with its own full-glossy, full colour, perfect bound magazine. Heart of the City CEO Alex Swney agrees, stating Auckland City is ever-expanding.

“Increasingly Auckland’s central city is beginning to develop that big town feel – parks are the gardens of apartment dwellers and the local café is their kitchen combine with a wide spread of street level cultures,” Swney says.

“When you add 70,000 students and 80,000 workers it’s an urban community that is unique in New Zealand. Central City is another sign of this emerging community … an idea whose time has well and truly arrived.”

People Publishing consulted widely with local CBD businesses to find the perfect look and feel for the magazine. Mike Taillie says: “The most likely customers for CBD businesses are the people who are already in the CBD – living and working - and our new magazine provides these businesses with a medium to directly target this group.”

With the emergence of great retail and business areas outside of the CBD, it’s increasingly hard to get people into town if they don’t work or live in town. City Central Magazine’s distribution at major commuter points such as Britomart, ferry terminals, carpark buildings and central city café’s mean it’s getting into the right hands — people who already spend most of their lives within the urban CBD boundaries.

City Central Magazine will be edited by freelance journalist Megan Singleton, a specialist travel writer who is now looking forward to travelling around her own city, exploring the many nooks and crannies and hard to find places Auckland offers.
