Further Irrigation Bans After Hot Weekend

Media Release
2 February 2009

Further Irrigation Bans After Hot Weekend

After souring temperatures this weekend, river levels have dropped further and more irrigation bans have been placed by Hawke's Bay Regional Council on rivers in Central Hawke’s Bay.

The bans below are effective from midnight tonight (Monday 2 February).

Water takes for irrigation from the Tukipo River are banned.

Takes from the Waipawa River set at the lowest flow limit are banned, making the whole of the Waipawa under irrigation ban.

Takes from the Tukituki River set at both flow limits at the Tapairu Road monitoring site are banned.  Downstream flows are still above low flow limits so irrigation set at the Red Bridge monitoring site is still permitted.

Water takes for stock and domestic use are still permitted.

Up to date information on low flows can be found on the Regional Council’s website - http://www.hbrc.govt.nz/WhatWeDo/Water/LowFlows/tabid/104/Default.aspx

Total Irrigation Bans

Ngaruroro River, Raupere Stream, Puhokio Stream, Karewarewa Stream, Poukawa Stream, Irongate Stream, Te Waikaha, Karamu Stream, Waipawa River, Tukipo River, Tukituki River (Tapairu Road) and Papanui Stream.
