Discover Henley Lake this weekend

Henley Lake is a popular recreation spot with many thousands of visitors a year, but there’s a lot more to Wairarapa’s only freshwater lake. This weekend, take the opportunity to learn about the lake from Henley Trust experts in Discover Henley Lake, a part of Greater Wellington’s Regional Outdoors Programme.

“The lake and its surrounding environment is pretty much an ecological classroom with streams, ponds, wetlands, lagoons, plantings of native and exotic trees, and a good network of paths joining everything up,” Henley Trust Chair Tom Ward says.

“The lake has much to offer – for example, it’s one of the best places in the Wairarapa for birdwatching. There are over 50 species of birds that the Trust has spotted over the years, and we reckon participants are likely to see at least 30 during the tour.”

Tom says that if the weather’s fine, participants may also get to see some of the sports that make the lake such a popular spot for recreation. “Thousands of people a year take part in kayaking, waka ama and small yacht and model boat sailing on the lake – it really is the perfect venue for non-motorised water sports.”

The Henley Trust will lead the event. The Trust will talk about the lake’s ambitious beginnings back in the 1960s through to the work of today’s Trust members, who put in up to 26 hours a week of work, restoring wetlands and planting native trees and shrubs to maintain and enhance the area.

This is a free, buggy-friendly event.
