Media Release
8 March 2009

Note to Editors and Chief Reporters: Please note where and when hui will be held in your area.

NGAPUHI Te tiriti o Waitangi iwi consultation hui 2009

A series of hui for Ngapuhi hapu katoa, on their proposed comprehensive Te Tiriti o Waitangi claims settlement process, will be held throughout Aotearoa-New Zealand and Australia after Easter.

Ngapuhi has the largest affiliation of any New Zealand iwi, with 122,214 people (2006 census).

The road-shows, during April and May, will gather information from hapu about the way forward for Ngapuhi as they look toward settlement of their claim, with the main focus of discussion being representation and mandate issues.

Further information is available on www.ngapuhi.iwi.nz .

The goal of these hui is to establish a robust process of representation for the coming settlement process. These hui will be facilitated by the Ngapuhi Te Tiriti o Waitangi Sub-Committee Chair, Raniera (Sonny) Tau.

Said Mr Tau: “Ngapuhi whanau and hapu will have an initial opportunity to participate at these hui during April and May, and we will be coming back later in the year for another round of discussions based on what comes out of this round of korero.

“We want as many kuia and kaumatua to attend as possible so we can gain the benefit of their wisdom and guidance. We welcome all Ngapuhi, even if you haven’t been involved with your hapu. This will be a great opportunity to connect with your iwi and meet up with whanaunga.
