Tsunami Potential Threat Advisory update

For immediate release:2pm Wednesday 30 September 2009

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) issued a Tsunami Warning following the Samoa earthquake at 0648 this morning. This was subsequently downgraded to a Potential Threat Advisory.

The Potential Threat Advisory remains in place. MCDEM is assessing information further with the assistance of scientific advisors. A wave of 80cm was measured at East Cape at 1300 NZDT today. There is still the potential for waves of a similar or lesser height to arrive over the next few hours. We are advised to expect waves to continue for the rest of the day. Observations will continue to be made and MCDEM will maintain hourly updates.

There is still an ongoing threat of strong currents affecting coastal areas. People should remain clear of beaches and refrain from boating activities.

Members of the public should continue to listen to their local radio stations or contact their district or city council for further information.
