Wellington region prepared for tsunami response

Wellington Region Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Chairperson Mayor Wayne Guppy said today the Wellington Region Civil Defence Emergency Management Group would have implemented the Group Tsunami Evacuation Plan for the Wellington region had evacuations been necessary.

Over the past few years civil defence in the Wellington region has been focusing on the development of tsunami warning and evacuation plans. All local councils have made arrangements for tsunami evacuation which will allow for structured evacuations of those at risk.

Mayor Guppy commented that the actions of those who went down to the beaches were of great concern, particularly as the public were advised to stay away from the beaches. Mayor Guppy went on to say “the power of a tsunami wave should not be underestimated; these are extremely powerful and can cause significant damage even if they are less than one metre in size”.

Mayor Guppy said that, if you are in a flat coastal area, you should move to higher ground immediately after a substantial earthquake. Always listen to your radio for advice and instructions, and, if possible, check your local council’s website. It is imperative that the public heed any warnings or advice from Civil Defence or emergency services, as a tsunami has the potential to cause significant damage to the Wellington region.

Mayor Guppy says it is essential you know the hazards and risks in your area and prepare yourselves for any emergency.
