Public encouraged to spring clean for Samoa

Public encouraged to spring clean their wardrobes for Samoa

The man who makes a career out of telling people to buy clothes is now encouraging people to give them away.

“Aucklanders should make the most of Maersk’s generous offer of free shipping containers to Samoa by sorting out their wardrobes and drawers,” says Cameron Brewer, chief executive of the Newmarket Business Association.

“Let’s see if we fill up these shipping containers. Many Aucklanders haven’t got a lot of spare cash but still want to help. Donating second-hand clothes costs nothing yet will make such a difference. We all own at least 25% more clothes than we ever need. It’s the perfect time of year to spring clean and there’s no better cause than the Samoan Tsunami Appeal.

“I’ve dropped off a big laundry basket of clothes at the collection centre in Henderson which is an impressive facility that’s busy sorting and housing a lot of items already donated. It feels good because you know 100% of your donation is going to Samoa where help is desperately needed,” says Cameron Brewer.

For people who want to donate second-hand clothes or non-perishable food to Samoa the Auckland City Council is advising there are two main collection centres open from 9am to 11pm, seven days a week:

1. Mau Theatre, Corban Estate, 426 Great North Road, Henderson.
This collection centre is accepting general donations as well as specific donations for villages in Salea'aumua, Mutiatele, Pue, Malaela, Satitoa, Poutasi, Saleapaga, Lalomanu, Lepa and Tutuila.

2. Te Wananga Aotearoa, 15 Canning Crescent, Mangere.
This collection centre is accepting general donations as well as specific donations for villages in Ulutogia, Vailoa, Poutasi, Saleapaga, Lalomanu, Saanapu, Siumu and Tutuila.
