ARTA partners with Google Maps

ARTA Media Release
15 December 2009

ARTA partners with Google Maps

The Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) announced today it has joined with Google Maps to enable its customers to access public transport information and directions using Google Transit, a feature of Google Maps. Google Transit is available in more than 440 cities around the world, in 35 countries.

ARTA’s General Manager, Customer Services, Mark Lambert says, “This is another step in ARTA’s drive to make planning public transport journeys easier and more accessible for our customers. People searching for directions in Auckland on Google Maps will now have the extra option to view public transit options. Initially, the service will extend to the comprehensive network of bus services throughout the Auckland region, however in the coming months train and ferry information will also be added to the service.

“The service provides a link through to the MAXX website (maxx.co.nz) where people can find out more details about fares and schedules.”

Mr Lambert said the way the system would work was that in areas where transit data was available, public transit directions would appear as an addition to driving directions. Bus stop and shortly train station and ferry icons would appear on Google Maps at http://maps.google.co.nz, offering people more choice in respect of their transport options.

“Google are an extremely well respected and trusted organisation and a source of information for many people, so it made perfect sense to partner with them to provide this service for our customers”said Mr Lambert.

Andrew Foster, Product Manager, Google Maps said "It's fantastic to have Auckland's extensive bus network searchable on Google Maps for the benefit of both the city's residents and visitors. We look forward to adding trains and ferries to the system shortly.

“Google Transit gives commuters the option of specifying the date and time (either the time you would like to depart or the time you'd like to arrive) of their trips. Commuters are provided with up to three options and the details of each, so that they can choose the route most convenient for them. There is also a link to easily access directions for the return trip”.

Mr Foster said, “We hope this initiative will encourage Aucklanders to think about all the choices they now have available to them in respect of commuting around the city. “
