Christchurch Welcomes Teams

18 December 2009
Christchurch Welcomes Teams

Christchurch has a fantastic opportunity to showcase the city and its rugby heritage when it welcomes teams from seven nations for the Rugby World Cup in 2011, according to Mayor Bob Parker.

“This is a brilliant outcome that guarantees World Cup fever will infect the city in 2011. It is great for the city, great for the economy and great for rugby.

“Not only will these teams spend a considerable period of time in Christchurch, they will also bring with them supporters from their home countries,” says Bob Parker. “This is a great opportunity for us all to welcome these visitors to our city, and to give them an international rugby experience of a lifetime – whether that is on the rugby field, at the stadium or in the fan zones around the city.

“We’ll be giving all of these visitors many good reasons why they should return to visit us again in the future and tell their family and friends about their New Zealand experience.”

Mr Parker said that the city welcomed all teams that would visit Christchurch during the Rugby World Cup. “But I know there will be many locals who will be especially pleased to hear that we will have extended hosting opportunities for countries like Argentina, England, Australia and Scotland. I am sure there will be many opportunities to demonstrate the warmth of our welcome for these groups and to make them feel right at home while they are here in our city.”
