Summerfields Foods in the Ilam has the ideal
solution. Cook them yourself.
Opened in September in
the Ilam Shops in Christchurch, Summerfields Foods
specialises in providing a one-stop shop for the ingredients
you need to make a range of ethnic cuisine at home.
Karl
and Fiona Summerfield opened the shop after experiencing the
frustration of having to search all over for the ingredients
to try out dishes from other countries at home.
Four
months on, the idea has proved a hit with locals.
“I know all about New Year resolutions to eat more healthily,” Karl says. “One of the reasons we got into cooking ethnic recipes at home was to eat in a tasty but healthy way."
”And it’s fun. With good ingredients
anyone can turn out something delicious."
Starting a new
business in the middle of a recession doesn’t sound like a
recipe for success, but the response has been overwhelmingly
positive.
"It is always tricky to know if a shop you want is what other people want," says Fiona. “But we’ve customers thrilled to find us. It is exciting helping people finally use recipes they had put away out of frustration at being unable to find the ingredients."
As the business grows they are continuing to increase their product range. "We have more plans for 2010, adding new sections such as refrigerated goods." says Karl. "We have also spent the Christmas break visiting markets to find great Kiwi made products to add to our selection."
They have recipes
available and a computer with broadband for customers to
check recipes or look up information on ingredients. Plus a
collection of fresh herbs that customers can use for free
for their dinner.
The shop covers most of the world with
ingredients in sections from Europe to the Middle East, Asia
and the Americas.
