Children's Home gets energy-wise programme from Council

Christchurch City Council has stepped in to help Cholmondeley Children's home save thousands of dollars by using energy wisely

The Council carried out an energy audit and devised a programme of measures to immediately curb energy wastage and a plan of work for sustained and efficient energy usage.

The initial programme will drop the energy use cost of the home by $3,869 a year (a drop of 11 percent on the present usage) while the long-term result will be a drop in energy use by 30 percent.

The programmes include 'greening' the building to cut back on energy leakage and wastage, a process Mayor Bob Parker describes as incorporating 'small but clever changes that saves thousands of dollars'. Another element of the programmes includes putting in place behavioural changes in the daily routine of the Home to increase efficiency.

"It was important for me ensure the children were as warm and comfortable as possible, and the energy audit and the programmes put in place will enable this to happen," says Mr Parker. The Mayor initiated the audit following a visit to the Home in November.

"This also offers the Council a great opportunity to raise public awareness on how easy it is to implement no cost or low-cost measures to save on energy use.

We are working towards a sustainable city and it is important that we, as a city, are able to transform the energy efficiency of our domestic housing stock, " says Mr Parker, adding that delivering energy saving in existing homes will aid residents in combating energy poverty.

The energy audit was carried out by the Council's Energy Manager Leonid Itskovich. There are several firms in Christchurch offering energy auditing services
