Extra funds for North Shore Footpaths

North Shore City Council is pleased to announce an additional $500,000 funding in the 2009/10 year for the replacement and renewal of our city’s most run-down footpaths.  

This extra funding for footpaths has in effect come about as a result of the reduction in funding available to Council in the National Land Transport Programme (NLTP).   

North Shore City Councillor, Ken McKay, says the overal funding reduction has provided a silver lining of sorts.  

"In this instance it has enabled Council to reallocate $500,000 of its local share funding, previously allocated to road carriageway maintenance, to the carrying out of some very handy footpath replacement.  

"This extra funding will enable Council to replace or resurface approximately an additional five kilometres of our city’s least    impressive footpaths," explains Mr McKay.      

Each year Council undertakes a footpath condition rating survey to identify the worst sections of footpath and monitor overall footpath condition. All footpaths across the city are given a 1-5 grading, 1 being the best grading and 5 the worst grading.   

The main causes of damage to footpaths are from vehicles driving over them, followed by utility works within the road corridor and tree roots.  

North Shore City Council is currently responsible for over 1,050km of footpaths across the North Shore.
