Major diversions in place after SH3 fatal crash

Major diversions in place after SH3 closed following Piopio fatal

Waikato Police are urging motorists to drive to the conditions following a fatal crash outside the King Country town of Piopio late this morning.

Te Kuiti Sub-area Manager, Senior Sergeant Rob Van Kalken, said SH3 was closed and significant diversions have had to be established following the crash that happened shortly after 11am.

"The Waikato Serious Crash Unit are at the seen working to establish the cause of the crash involved a single vehicle and the death of the male driver, the cars sole occupant.

"Initial indications are the man suffered fatal injuries after he lost control in slippery conditions and his car rolled a number of times. The man's death has been reported to the Coroner and until we know exactly what has happened we're asking motorists to watch their speed with the current conditions."

With diversions established meaning travellers heading from the Waikato to Mokau or on to New Plymouth now having to make significant detours Mr Van Kalken asked drivers to reconsider non-essential travel.

"There's significant additional travel time added because of the diversion so if you have to make the trip we ask that you exercise patience and drive to the conditions," he said.
