Guerilla Gardening kicks off Community Week

Grey Lynners will wake up on Sunday morning to a new vegetable and flower garden planted on Council maintained grass berm over night by Ooooby. The planting known as "berm bombing" or "guerilla gardening" kicks off a week of community-focused events showcased in the programme of the Grey Lynn 2030 Week.

Christy Martin from Ooooby says "As footpaths have been upgraded around our neighbourhood we have seen the berms poorly planted with a lot of weeds coming through because of the hot weather. The berm bombing not only makes the streets look more attractive it also highlights the importance of access to locally grown food".

"We are lucky in Grey Lynn to have several community gardens such as the garden at St Columba Church plus a Farmers Market where locals can bring their excess produce to sell at the Ooooby stand, but there is still a lot of public land that could be used for growing vegetables and planting fruit trees" said Ms Martin

Ooooby is an acronym for 'Out of our own back yards.' Ooooby is all about connecting communities through local food and is part of the food revolution seeing people in Western Countries return to their own back yards to embrace the once declining skill of food growing.

The Grey Lynn 2030 Week organiser Pippa Coom says "A number of groups, who share our vision of a sustainable community, have come on board to participate in the Week. We have a particularly close relationship with Ooooby as they are such an important part of the Grey Lynn Farmers Market which came out of one of the first Grey Lynn 2030 meetings."

"The berm bombing organised for the Week is not a one off stunt", says Ms Coom "Grey Lynn 2030 will be working with Ooooby on a project to plant fruit trees on the berms all around our community over the next year."
