Banks Says NO to Mining on Great Barrier

Auckland City Mayor John Banks will be making strong submissions against any mining on Great Barrier Island and is encouraging the citizens of Greater Auckland to do the same.

Mayor Banks says he was shocked to learn the 705 hectare Te Ahumata Plateau on Great Barrier Island has been included in the Government’s proposal to open up Schedule 4.

“I am the Mayor for Great Barrier Island and I am completely opposed to any mining on this island. It is the untouched jewel in the crown of the Hauraki Maritime Park.

“The suggestion that Great Barrier Island be removed from Schedule 4 protection is unacceptable.”

Mayor Banks says mining would have a severe impact on the local tourism and fishing industries.

“This would be an ecological disaster, a serious blow for the established economy that depends on the Barrier’s untarnished image.

“Tens of thousands of people visit this magnificent destination every year to enjoy its beauty. This has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth at the doorstep of our Super City.”

Te Ahumata Plateau area is 2.6% of Great Barrier Island or 4.6% of public conservation land on the island.

“The infrastructure needed for mining would be devastating to the local environment. It could mean an enlarged airport, a large scale industrial port and wharf system that would be both expensive and destructive to the pristine environment.

“I realise there is still a six week consultation period to go through but I encourage all the people of Greater Auckland to speak out and demand this be dropped from the plans.

“As someone who is already Mayor for Great Barrier Island and plans to be Mayor for a Greater Auckland, I am determined to make it clear to Wellington that this island and its tranquil lifestyle should remain a natural treasure.”
