Manukau’s newest housing complex ready for tenants

Manukau’s newest housing complex ready for tenants

The residents of Gallaher Court, the first housing for the elderly units to be built in Manukau in 26 years, are excited about moving into their new home.

Manukau City Council’s two-storey complex is located in Alfriston Road, Manurewa. Its 16 one bedroom units are constructed mainly in brick. Upstairs units have a deck and downstairs units a courtyard. The complex has been purpose-built keeping in mind the special needs of the elderly tenants. This includes accessible bathrooms and a lift for easy access to the first floor.

The building has been given the Lifemark seal of approval. The approval is awarded to homes which are designed to be used, or adapted for use, by people of all ages and abilities. To achieve the Lifemark certification a building has to undergo a rigorous review process. Gallaher Court is the first local government development in the country to be Lifemark approved.

Manukau Mayor Len Brown will officially open the $2.2 million development on Friday 16 April. He is pleased about the latest addition to Manukau’s housing for the elderly portfolio.

“The council sees itself as having an important role in providing affordable housing to our elderly people with limited means.

“This new complex is a great example of how we are doing this. I am sure that Gallaher Court will serve our elderly residents well into the future.”

Media are welcome to attend the official opening:
