Tourist Dies In Accident At Franz Joseph Glacier

At about 1.30 pm today the 12th of June 2010, a 38 year old Australian male tourist died as a result of a fall on Franz Joseph Glacier South Westland.

He was taking part in a guided walk on the Glacier. As the group was negotiating a crevasse he slipped and fell about 4-6 metres into the crevasse.

A rescue operation was carried out by the glacier guide company and he was removed from the crevasse.

As a result of the fall he stopped breathing. Resuscitation was attempted but he could not be revived.

Police are investigating the matter on behalf of the Coroner.

Interpol are attempting to contact the male's family who do not live in Australia.

His details cannot be released until next of kin have been advised.
