Te Mahi Kai at the waterfront market this Sunday

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) is drawing to a close - with the Wellington finale this Sunday 1 August at the Harbourside Food Market on the waterfront at Waitangi Park.

The national theme of Māori Language Week this year is ‘Te Mahi Kai’ (the language of food) and what better place to celebrate than the food markets?

Waiata, haka and bilingual signage will give Wellingtonians the opportunity to live the language of food in te reo.

Formalities kick off at 8am with a mihi/whakatau/karakia by Ben Ngaia (Te Atiawa/Taranaki/Ngāti Ruanui).

Rugby celebrity Jacob Ellison  (NZ Māori squad, Wellington Lions, Hurricanes) will perform the famous haka Ka Mate and the public are welcome to join him.

The Māori CD Tipi Haere Te Reo by Pete Rangiwai and Hohepa MacDougall will be promoted thoughout the day and there will be performances from the Keelan whānau and Zemara.

The nearby City Markets (in the Chaffers apartment building) is also marking Te Wiki o te reo Māori with bilingual signage and creative activities using whakatauki (proverbs).
