Man killed in crash on Desert Road.
One man has been killed following a road crash in the Desert Road north of Waiouru this morning.
The crash happened around 7.45am when a Toyota sedan travelling south collided with a truck and trailer unit travelling north.
The sole male occupant of the Toyota, whose details are unconfirmed at this time, died at the scene. The male driver of the truck from Palmerston North, age unknown at this time, was not hurt.
A rescue helicopter was initially dispatched to the scene but later stood down.
Diversions are in place at Waiouru and Rangipo.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Serious Crash Investigation Unit. The road conditions were cold and icy but it is too early to determined whether that was a factor in the crash.
