Old-fashioned campaigning the key to winning ward

Old-fashioned campaigning the key to winning Albert-Eden-Roskill

City Vision is hoping that good old-fashioned campaigning will win them the two Albert-Eden-Roskill Council seats on the new Auckland Council.

While other candidates may be relying on computer age technologies to deliver their message, sitting councillors Cathy Casey and Glenda Fryer are sticking with tried and tested face-to-face campaigning methods. Since the beginning of June, the two candidates have been out on the streets meeting with people in the many and varied communities that make up Albert-Eden-Roskill and holding old-fashioned street meetings of the soap box variety.

“In our face-to-face meetings, people see that we that are prepared to listen and also learn about our track record of fighting for grassroots local concerns. They tell us they want a strong voice for their communities on the new Auckland Council.”

Councillor Cathy Casey said, “For the last three months, I have been door knocking for up to five hours a day in Mt Roskill, Waterview, Point Chevalier, Kingsland, Sandringham, Western Springs and Balmoral.  Already I have knocked over 5,000 doors.  The reception has been really warm.  People are very appreciative that their local councillor is taking the time and trouble to meet them on their home turf.  I have the time to explain to them about the confusing changes and allay their fears about losing their local community identity.”

Councillor Glenda Fryer said, “I have personally knocked on the door of almost every shop, factory, office and small business in Mt Roskill, Mt Albert and Mt Eden.  Business owners, their staff and customers seem to appreciate having time to chat and get to know their local councillor and they have certainly made their views known to me about controversial issues such as Dominion Road, as well as general concerns across the ward regarding local shopping centres and the need for them to be graffiti-free, safe, clean and vibrant.”

“Voters in Albert-Eden-Roskill have a very stark choice. We are fighting hard for every vote. While our opponents yell at local residents from an enormous gas guzzling truck, we are on the streets of the ward every day actually talking to people and making sure that they vote”, say the councillors.
