Media Release, for immediate release, Monday 30 August 2010

Outstanding Response To Far North Community Awards

Locals have got behind their volunteers with 72 groups nominated for the TrustPower Far North Community Awards.

Nominations for the Awards closed on Friday 13 August. The TrustPower Far North Community Awards, which recognise and reward volunteers for the outstanding contribution they make to the local community, are run in conjunction with the Far North District Council.

TrustPower Community Relations Representative Suzi Luff says she is delighted that so many selfless community groups will be celebrated through this year’s TrustPower Community Awards.

“These groups are very generous with their time and work hard to make the Far North a better place to live. This is the second year that the Community Awards have been run in the Far North and the number of nominations reflects that there many voluntary groups working hard for this community.

The Far North community should be very proud of its hard working volunteers who help create the fabulous Far North community spirit. It’s wonderful that through these awards we can celebrate their fantastic efforts,” says Miss Luff.

The Awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/Youth Development. The category winners receive $500 and runners-up receive $250. The Supreme Winner will take home $1,500, a trophy, framed certificate and an all-expenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards.

The 2010 TrustPower National Community Awards are being held in Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty districts in March 2011.

The Supreme Winner will also win a six month subscription to Fundraising in New Zealand magazine, New Zealand's only monthly publication dedicated to all things fundraising.

Regional Supreme Winners will also be filmed by a TVNZ 6 crew to feature in a new series called ‘Volunteer Power’.

TVNZ 6 has partnered with the TrustPower Community Awards in 2010 to bring remarkable stories of volunteers all over the country. Volunteer Power, presented by Julia Bloore and Jim Mora tells the stories of visionary and award-winning volunteer projects operating in Kiwi communities.

TVNZ 6 is available on Freeview/TiVo channel 6 and on SKY/Telstra channel 16.

The nominations for the TrustPower Far North Community Awards are currently being prepared for judging. The TrustPower Far North Community Awards will be announced and presented at a function on Monday 13 September, to which all nominated organisations will be invited.
