Demolition of Former Art Gallery Starts Next Week

Partial Demolition of Former Art Gallery

Dunedin (Friday 3 September 2010) - Work to demolish three bays from the southern end of the former art gallery at Logan Park will begin next week.
Initially, work will involve removal of the relevant section of roof, two end trusses and two bays, including foundations, by mid-September to allow groundwork extending the outfield of University Oval to begin.

The last of the three bays approved for demolition is scheduled to be removed by the end of September following the installation of a temporary exterior wall.

The cost of this work is $230,000 which includes the relocation of a power transformer earlier this year.
Within 18 months of completion of the demolition work, further design work will be carried out to determine the final finish and appearance of the southern end of the building.

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust is pleased that a heritage covenant has been executed with the DCC, in accordance with one of the conditions of consent, to ensure the long-term protection of the remaining sections of the former art gallery building.
The purpose of the covenant is to identify and protect the building's key heritage features while enabling its repair and restoration for future community use.
