Rivers monitored as heavy rain fall affects Region

Horizons Regional Council is monitoring river levels as heavy rainfall affects parts of the Region.

Heavy rain has been falling throughout the lower parts of the Region and is predicted to continue until later this afternoon.

There is significant surface flooding in the Horowhenua and Tararua and roads have been closed as a result.

“We are expecting up to 100mm more rain to fall in the Tararuas and between 60-80mm in the Ruahines. We will continue to monitor the situation and respond as appropriate,” said Allan Cook, Horizons Emergency Manager.

Mr Cook said that if rain continued as predicted, the council would need to open the Motoa Flood Gates.

“We may need to open the gates in the early hours of tomorrow morning. Staff are preparing for this event and will keep the public informed of the situation.

Public are advised to exercise caution on the roads and avoid rivers and streams which could rise rapidly.

Further information will be made available as it comes to hand.
