Local HB earthquake reminder to be prepared

Local HB earthquake reminder to be prepared

Hawke’s Bay CDEM Group Coordinator Nigel Simpson said that this morning’s 5.2 M earthquake centred just off the coast of southern Hawke’s Bay gave Porangahau residents a sharp reminder.

“The earthquake at 10.48am was felt strongly in the coastal community of Porangahau where residents sheltered in doorways as objects fell off shelves,” he said.

“No significant reports of damage have been received.”

This shake was the second in Hawke’s Bay this morning with a 3.6 quake at a depth of 40 km felt at 10.03 am and centred near Waipawa.

“If anyone needs any more reminders to be prepared for an emergency at home and at work, this was it. Earthquakes can strike at any time.”

People need to at least have water stored, and a battery powered radio and torch, he said.

“Despite these local earthquakes, our thoughts remain with the residents of Canterbury and the people involved in helping that community recover from the devastation.”

Hawke’s Bay people who wish to contribute towards earthquake relief in Canterbury can do so online through the Salvation Army (or call 0800 530 000) and the NZ Red Cross (or call 0900 33 200 to make an automatic $20 donation.) Most banks around the country have boxes where donations can be made.
