Cookbook for Hauraki Whānau

Healthy Low-Cost Cookbook for Hauraki Whānau

A new recipe book launched next week will help Hauraki families/ whānau, health providers and community groups cook healthy kai on a budget.

Kia Kaha Te Kai is a collection of nutritious, low-cost recipes put together by Te Korowai Hauora O Hauraki with funding from Waikato District Health Board’s Healthy Eating Healthy Action (HEHA) programme.

General manager Gwendoline Welburn said the book is a community resource to make healthy cooking easy with recipes for meals and snacks; and ideas for what to do with leftovers.

“There are a lot of cookbooks around but we have struggled to find appropriate recipes that are whānau focused, nutritionally sound, and budget conscious.”

“We wanted recipes that would feed a whole whānau, are cheap, healthy and use ingredients they already had in the cupboard.”

“Kia Kaha Te Kai addresses that need and the recipes use kai that is plentiful in Hauraki.”

Te Korowai staff pulled together their favourite whānau recipes for the book, which were critiqued and modified by their dietitian.

Mrs Welburn said the book also includes tips for how small changes can make meals much healthier.

“Readers will recognise some old favourites, which we changed slightly to fit the healthy kai kaupapa. We’ve also included some new ideas for whānau to try.”

Kia Kaha Te Kai will be launched at Whare Hui, Te Korowai Hauora O Hauraki next Friday (1 October), 10am – 12noon.

The launch includes a powhiri and blessing, a taste testing session of the recipes and speeches by Te Korowai general manager, Gwendol Welburn, chief executive Hugh Kinnimonth, and Waikato DHB HEHA programme director Janet Hanvey.
Te Korowai Hauora O Hauraki is an iwi health provider serving all people within the Hauraki rohe under a kaupapa Maori philosophy.

Established over 16 years ago, the provider has more then 170 employees working in a range of health capacities from six offices throughout Hauraki – Thames, Coromandel, Whitianga, Waihi, Te Aroha and Paeroa.

Kia Kaha Te Kai aligns with other HEHA funded projects underway in Hauraki – Hauraki Healthy Kai that helps retailers identify and promote their healthy options to customers and The Paeroa Way that works with schools in the area to teach students about the importance of good nutrition.

After the book launch on 1 October, free copies of Kia Kaha Te Kai will be available to download at www.korowai.co.nz and www.waikatodhb.govt.nz/HEHA.
