Reboot for Community Webhosting
Service
On 30 September 2010, Wellington Community Net Trust officially opens for new business after narrowly escaping closure when Wellington City Council withdrew funding for Wellington Community Net at the end of June 2010.
A group of WCN members got together and formed a charitable trust called Wellington Community Net Trust. The Trust successfully negotiated with Wellington ICT and WCC for the handover of all of WCN's intellectual property and physical assets. WCNT applied for and obtained some seed funding from WCC, and is now hosting the re-launch of WCN’s service at a function being held at the premises of its new sponsor The New Zealand School of Business & Government.
As a non-profit Charitable Trust WCNT provides free webhosting for local groups to get their messages out to the community via the Internet. Nearly 400 web sites are currently hosted.
Skilled volunteers keep the hosting systems running on a server orginally donated by the Wellington City Council. This facilitates communication between thousands of members of a very wide range of community groups, as well as each group being able to communicate its objectives and aspirations with the wider world.
“We are grateful for the support of the NZ School of Business & Government which has taken over housing the Trust’s server from Wellington City Council. The changeover went so smoothly that many of the Trust’s current users were unaware of the change in arrangements” said John Dean, Chairman of the Wellington Community Net Trust. “We are now ready to bring more community groups on board."
