Quake Hit Families To Find Love In Palmerston North

Following the devastating earthquake that hit Christchurch on 4 September, the Rotary Club of Palmerston North put together a package that would allow families affected by quake to get away for a few days and relax. The packages, named "From Palmerston North with Love", include free accommodation and activities in Palmerston North.

On Friday the 15th of October, seven families will arrive in Palmerston North to take up this offer with a further family arriving on 29 October. All families will stay in the City for a weekend.

President of the Rotary Club of Palmerston North, Bessy Rasmussen, said that the families will be well looked after over the weekend with a number of local businesses pitching in to help out.

“We’re really thrilled to be hosting these eight families, and will be doing everything we can to make sure they enjoy their time in Palmerston North,” says Bessy.

“Twenty-two people will be treated to free accommodation during their stay courtesy of the Hotel Coachman, Travelodge and Arena Motor Lodge and other support has been provided by the Plaza, Palmerston North City Council, Destination Manawatu and Fonterra. The families will have a number of activities throughout the weekend free of charge including Hot Laps at Manfield and train rides in the Esplanade.”

“All families will be welcomed at the Airport on arrival by our Mayor, Jono Naylor. Members of the Rotary Club will also be on hand to welcome them and transport them to their accommodation. Our members and Fonterra will also be providing meals for the families in their own homes.”

“We are so proud of the way our community has gotten behind this project. We’re hoping the families from Christchurch will have a wonderful and enjoyable time in our City and have a much needed respite from the stress of living through such a devastating event.”

The Rotary club of Palmerston North feel that actions speak louder that words and their theme for this year is Actions Count.

The Rotary clubs across New Zealand have a continuing involvement with Shelter Box appeals and disaster relief and in this instance wish for charity begin at home.
