Mayoral Taskforce acts on Eden Park Issues

The taskforce convened by the Mayor to deal with issues raised after the rugby league double header at Eden Park has agreed to take immediate action.

The taskforce includes the chief executives of Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and Eden Park as well as senior police, councillors and local board members.

Meeting for the first time today, the group agreed on a number of steps to avoid a repeat of previous problems.

Those steps include

o Better communication and enforcement of liquor bans and acceptable levels of behaviour both in and outside of the ground

o Better coordination of communication between the various agencies and local residents

o Better screening of patrons going into the ground to ensure liquor is not smuggled in

o Greater numbers of security staff at Eden Park who will be both more proactive and more visible

o Higher police visibility outside the ground

These measures will be in place in time for the next major test of crowd management in the Eden Park precinct, the Black Caps Pakistan Twenty 20 game on Boxing Day.

“Every time we hold a major sporting event at Eden Park, Auckland is on show to the world. We need to put our best foot forward to ensure events are as successful as they possibly can be,” says Len Brown.

“Major events at Eden Park need to be a celebration for patrons and residents if we are to move forward as an events capital.”

“The steps announced today and others in development are designed to ensure this happens.”
