The Longest Handshake
Auckland Down Syndrome Association is really proud to have
been chosen by Alastair Galpin of www.WorldRecordChase.com, second biggest
world record
breaker of the decade 2000-2009, as the
charity he wants to promote, during the upcoming World's
Longest Handshake, Father Duffy Square, New
York City,
starting on Friday 14 January, time t.b.c., until the last
team stands.
Alastair Galpin was recognised in
Guinness World Records™ 2010 as being the second biggest
record holder of the decade (2000-2009) for
breaking 38
world records, with only Ashrita Furman (USA) having broken
more Guinness World Records™ during that time.
He has managed to attract media attention as a record
holder in unusual disciplines. He was part of the first team
worldwide to hold the world
record, in 2006, for the
longest handshake (nine hours, 19 minutes), which has since
been superseded many times and currently stands at 19 hours,
35 minutes,
achieved by Rohit and Santosh Timilsina
(Nepal). The Nepalese attempt is still under review.
Between 6 and 12 teams will be participating and there will be an opportunity to donate a dollar amount for every hour hands are shaken.
Teams from Nepal, New Zealand, Britain, Israel-Palestine, Australia and the USA have already confirmed participation, with more expected.

If Alastair is lucky enough
- and he seems to think he will be - to be in the last "team
shaking", ADSA is expecting to receive a considerable sum
of money from the event finance raised. Whether or not
Alastair and his partner win, though, ADSA will receive 25%
of the gross proceeds
distributed to this team from the
event management.
