Rotorua Night Market to rock with Ward 16

Rotorua Night Market to rock with Ward 16

Rotorua Night Market shoppers are in for an extra treat at next Thursday's event with the addition of a performance by local high school rock band Ward 16.

On 20 January the popular night market area is extending from its normal Tutanekai Street block between Haupapa and Pukuatua streets to include the area outside the Pig and Whistle pub allowing a stage and seating area to be set up for a show to launch the band's debut CD.

Rotorua District Council business partnerships manager Nick Dallimore says the John Paul College students will be performing at the market as a lead-up to their appearance at Lakeside 2011.

"As part of the Wearable Creations 2010 show, the Rotorua Creative Art Trust introduced live music from selected local youth artists and Ward 16 got a great reception.

"We felt that there was a further opportunity to provide emerging artists with a professional platform to showcase their talent and to show their potential to the music industry.

"The launch recognises the achievements of Ward 16 to date and the release of a professional packaged CD right here in Rotorua. It's also about celebrating young artists, local businesses and the talented people we have in this community, showing what can be achieved when we work together."

Some other special youth guest artists will also perform at the Rotorua Night Market from 5pm, before Ward 16's CD launch and performance between 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

In addition to the the usual night market block, a temporary road closure will be in place on Thursday 20 January for half of the Tutanekai St block outside the Pig & Whistle, from 3.30pm to 9pm, to accommodate the music event.
