South Dunedin’s First Heritage Open Day

South Dunedin’s First Heritage Open Day

Dunedin (Monday, 14 February, 2011) - On Saturday, 19 February, a number of South Dunedin heritage treasures will be open and on display for free guided tours.

“People often don’t realise the interesting history of South Dunedin and the hidden gems in the suburb. The open day offers a great chance to go and explore,” says Glen Hazelton, DCC Policy Planner (Heritage).

The Mayfair Theatre, St Patrick’s Basilica Church and the Gasworks Museum will all be open to the community. Bruce Collier of the Mayfair Theatre says, “The Mayfair offers an important point of view with its original Edwardian decor and the role it plays as a community theatre.”

Those attending the Open Day can begin at either the Gasworks Museum on Braemar Street or the Mayfair Theatre on King Edward Street, at any time between 10.00am and 4.00pm.

There will be a sausage sizzle, bus and traction engine rides, a heritage treasure hunt with great prizes and much more.

“This is a great opportunity to experience Dunedin’s best kept secret, steamed up and working machinery and something of interest for all ages,” says Ann Barsby from the Gasworks Museum.

It is hoped that this will be the first of many open days in the area.
