Gathering against deep sea oil drilling meets tomorrow

Tomorrow morning (Saturday 2nd April 2011) Te Whānau ā Apanui will welcome all those who have gathered in response to their call to oppose Government-sanctioned deep sea oil drilling in the Raukumara Basin off the East Cape of the North Island.

A flotilla of five yachts – many of whom have opposed French nuclear testing in the Pacific and nuclear fuel shipments through the Tasman Sea – will be ceremonially welcomed by te Whānau ā Apanui at around 11am. The lead flotilla boats departed Auckland last Sunday and have since been joined by boats from The Bay of Islands and Whitianga.

• It is expected that hundreds of people will travel to the remote location
• The welcome will be followed by a hui to strategise what form future opposition will take
• Media will be made aware of the outcome at the conclusion of the hui
• There will be a media tent at the Marae – please check-in at the tent on arrival

Where: The Kauaetangohia Marae at Whangaparāoa Bay, right at the base of Cape Runaway, East Cape, North Island, New Zealand.
