Punters flock to back Michael Campbell at 2011 US Open

Punters flock to back Michael Campbell at 2011 US Open

Wednesday, 15 June 2011, 1.15pm

Tiger Woods is out and the field is wide-open, but punters have surprised the TAB by only showing interest in Michael Campbell in the 2011 US Open.

Campbell, the 2005 US Open Champion, has struggled to find form in 2011 but that has not dampened interest in New Zealand’s only hope. The TAB’s golf bookmaker, Kieran McAnulty was surprised at the interest, “Campbell opened at $300 so, as you can imagine, that sparked interest from his supporters back here in New Zealand.”

“With odds such as $60 to finish in the Top 5 and $150 to be leading after the first round, a decent Michael Campbell performance will surely to hurt the TAB. But somehow I doubt punters are worried about that” said McAnulty.

With a total of 7 options involving Campbell, the TAB has provided ample opportunities to get behind Titahi Bay’s favourite son.

They include:
Michael Campbell to beat his first round group ($2.70)
To make the cut ($8.00)
Michael Campbell to beat the Australian chances ($25)
Michael Campbell to finish best out of all former champions ($40)
US Open Top 5 ($60)
Leader after first round ($150)
US Open Winner ($300)

McAnulty added “the option that has attracted the most interest is ‘Cambo to make the cut’. We may have to re-consider the $8.00 on offer as at times it seems the whole country wants to get on.”

The US Open will be held at Congressional Country Club, Maryland and tees-off approximately 11.30pm Thursday night (NZ Time). TAB odds will be updated after each round of play. Live betting will also be provided during the final round.
