New waste directory for Bay of Plenty

Options for reducing your waste just got easier with Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s launch of a new online waste and recycling directory.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council Project Implementation Officer Annabelle Ellis said that the new online directory (recycle.boprc.govt.nz) will provide people with details about where to take their waste.

“This new directory is an easy way to find out what to do with your unwanted materials. There are many businesses that people aren’t aware of and we have now made it easier to find out,” Ms Ellis said.

The directory is a database of businesses that take or recycle waste from the Bay of Plenty. Households or businesses can simply select the type of waste they have and the directory will list the businesses who can take it.

The development of the new directory was a direct result of community feedback.

“From a review on waste services we found that people wanted to get rid of things in the right way rather than sending to landfill, but they just didn’t know how,” Ms Ellis said.

Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty Regional Councils decided to work collaboratively to develop local waste and recycling directories for each region.

“It has really taken off since then Auckland developed the template and we were then able to adapt it for our website,” Ms Ellis said.

Ms Ellis said it has been great to have local businesses and District Councils fully supportive of this online tool.

“From clothing to tyres to toxic chemicals, it’s surprising the vast amount of materials that can be recycled or disposed of sustainably. Some businesses even offer to come and pick things up at no cost,” Ms Ellis said.

The launch of the local directory coincides with the recent upgrade to the Waste Exchange website www.nothrow.co.nz. This site has been running since 1999 and continues to provide very successful options to exchange unwanted materials across the North Island.

“So with a new local waste and recycling directory as well as an upgraded waste exchange site, we hope that people will be encouraged to minimise their waste and act sustainably,” Ms Ellis said.
