New names join key Wellington organisations

Following a region-wide search for new candidates, Wellington City Council has made a number of appointments, and reappointments, to several key Council-controlled organisations (CCOs) in the city.

Council-controlled organisations are separate entities set up by the Council to independently manage facilities, or deliver specific services and developments, in order to help achieve the Council’s goals for Wellington .

In November 2010, the Council advertised for suitably-qualified Wellingtonians to register their interest in serving on a CCO board. This announcement, combined with a review of the Council’s policy on the appointment and remuneration of directors and trustees in March, provided the context for the latest round of appointments.

A shortlist for each vacancy was compiled from a database which, of course, included people who responded to the public announcement, and all of the appointments were considered and recommended to the Council by its Appointments Group. This Group comprises Mayor Celia Wade-Brown , Deputy Mayor Ian McKinnon, Council Chief Executive Garry Poole , and the Chair of the Council-controlled Organisations Monitoring Subcommittee, Alan Isaac

The appointments were confirmed at the Council’s meeting on 29 June.

The following new Council representatives have been appointed for three-year terms:
• Wellington Museums Trust: Jackie Lloyd and Jo Bransgrove
• Wellington Cable Car Limited: Nicki Crauford.
Derek McCorkindale has been appointed as a new Council representative to Wellington Waterfront Limited for a 2.5-year term.

Two City Councillors were also appointed as new representatives:
Cr Paul Eagle to Wellington Venues Limited for the remaining six months of the board's original transition period.
Cr Justin Lester to Wellington Waterfront Limited for 2.5 years.
The Council gratefully acknowledged the services of Mark Petersen during his tenure as a director of Wellington Waterfront Limited.

Acting Mayor Ian McKinnon says: “The city is fortunate to have such experienced and talented individuals willing to serve the city in this way. These CCOs are responsible for the delivery of services in a manner appropriate to this dynamic and creative city – but also in a way that is cost-effective. The CCOs look after the likes of our beloved Waterfront, Cable Car, City Gallery and Museum of Wellington City and Sea, and venues like the St James Theatre and the Town Hall and Michael Fowler Centre.”
