Art that¹s not in the mainstream

New Zealand’s leading advocate for self-taught and visionary art is coming to Nelson to speak at a Magenta Art Space fundraiser.

Stuart Shepherd lectures at the School of Fine Arts at Massey University, he’s a noted curator, has attended the New York Outsider Art Fair since 1991 and has been instrumental in taking New Zealand work to that event.

Juliette Fox who manages the art programme for mental health service users at Magenta says it is a real coup to have Stuart coming to Nelson to speak at the Suter on October 4th, 5.30pm.

“Having Stuart here will really validate our artists and the wonderful art they create,” she said. “I also think Stuart will have some really interesting things to say to anyone who is interested in art - self-taught and visionary art is another whole area of practice that we don’t usually see in public or dealer galleries.”

There will be work by Magenta in the Artist in Focus area at the Suter Art Gallery Shop for the month of October.

“We hope people will come early to Stuart’s talk so they can have a glass of wine at look at some of the work produced at Magenta – there is certainly some work that lives up to the title ‘visionary’,” Juliette says.

The talk is at 5.30pm on Tuesday October 4, and a cash bar will operate from 5pm. Entry is $15 with all proceeds going to Magenta. The event is in the lead up to Mental Health Awareness Week (10-16 October).
