Akatarawa Road Re-opens for Labour Weekend

Akatarawa Road Re-opens for Labour Weekend

14th October 2011

Upper Hutt, Wellington NZ, 14th October 2011 – Akatarawa Road will re-open next week in time for Labour Weekend. After an extensive programme of works by Upper Hutt City Council the Akatarawa Road is targeted to re-open next Friday 21st October from Upper Hutt through to Waikanae, with 3 new two lane bridges in place to improve road safety.

These bridges replace the old 1930’s single lane timber bridges which had reached the end of their economic life and had consequently become a potential safety issue for motorists. Upper Hutt City Council duly appointed engineering Consultants Beca who designed the new bridges and supervised their construction by Brian Perry Civil.

The construction programme has taken almost 6 months which is much longer than anticipated, however the 3 new bridges are a welcome improvement to the scenic Akatarawa Road for local residents and visitors alike.

Indeed Staglands Wildlife Reserve owner operator John Simister is delighted to see the road re-opening:

“These new 2 lane bridges will certainly improve our visitors’ journey to Staglands Wildlife Reserve and I am delighted that the road will be re-opening in time for Labour weekend. Spring is a particularly wonderful time to visit Staglands, as we always have lots of new borns to share with our visitors. This year is no exception, with cute Kune Kune piglets and British Alpine kids being our latest star attractions”.
