Partial opening of SH73: Brougham St, Chch after fatal crash

1 November 2011

Partial opening of SH73 at Brougham St in Christchurch after fatal crash

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) hopes to open one lane of State Highway 73 (SH73) in Christchurch shortly following a fatal crash involving a truck and a car earlier this morning.

The crash at 5am today closed both lanes of the highway with traffic detours around the crash site.

NZTA Highways Operations Manager Peter Connors say contractors are working hard to get one lane open to traffic before midday. While the crash caused some congestion during peak traffic this morning this has now eased and will improve once one lane of the highway is available.

Mr Connors said even with one traffic lane open there will still be speed restrictions and diversions in place. The aim is to have both lanes of the highway open ahead of this afternoon’s peak hour traffic flows, but that will depend on how long police crash investigators are at the scene.

Up to date information on the status of the highway is available at the NZTA’S highway info website at www.highwayinfo.govt.nz
