Wellington Police urge women to look after themselves this festive season

Wellington Police hope women will enjoy themselves whilst out in town celebrating the festive season, but ensure they have a good plan to get home safely.

Acting Wellington Area Commander Stephen Vaughan says young women are particularly vulnerable when under the influence of alcohol and need to look after themselves and their friends when they're out and about for a night out.

"When under the influence of alcohol, people have a tendency to lose their decision-making abilities and Police want to prevent women becoming vulnerable to sexual assaults this summer."

Detective Inspector Vaughan says with exams now over and the warmer weather upon us, young people tend to indulge in alcohol, but drinking responsibly and knowing how you're going to get home at the end of the night will make a difference.

He says there are some practical steps that can help put the crime prevention odds in your favour:

- If you're going to drink - make sure a friend is staying sober to look after everyone.
- If you do drink - avoid mixing drinks and keep the amounts small - especially if you're into spirits.
- Don't leave drinks unattended in a bar and be wary of strangers buying you drinks.
- If you get separated, have a pre-arranged meeting spot.
- Plan how you and your friends will get home - keep aside some money for the bus, train or taxi fare.
- If you're walking home, especially at night, stay as a group and stick to well-lit areas. Avoid being tempted to take shortcuts through dark alleys or stairways.
