Woman injured when horse kicks ramp of horse float

The Life Flight Trust responded to a woman injured on the Kapiti Coast late this morning.

At 1100 the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, was called to Paetawa Road near Peka Peka (north of Waikane).

On our arrival a WFA road crew was treating a 59 year old Paraparaumu woman who was suffering a seriously broken arm and leg.

"The woman was out for a bike ride and noticed someone having trouble loading a horse into a horse float" says Dave Greenberg, Life Flight crewman. "As the woman attempted to close the ramp at the back of the horse float, the horse kicked back at the ramp, causing it to fall onto the woman".

Police and fire service personnel closed the road so the helicopter could land near the injured woman.

The woman was treated at the scene for her injuries and then flown to the Wellington Hospital Emergency Department where she is currently being assessed and treated.

The Life Flight Trust is a charity providing air rescue and air ambulance services. It operates the Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a national air ambulance service.
