Franz Josef not dry

Franz Josef Township is open for business and fully watered in one of the West Coasts best summers on record.

However, residents and businesses have been asked to conserve water due to the pressure the town water supply has been put under with so many people visiting the glacier region - taking advantage of the best weather in the country. A hiccup with the water supply system resulted in water services being cut for 1.5hours, but the town is now being supplied fresh water direct from the side of a mountain in the adjoining national park and all services are back operational.

“It is an absolutely brilliant time to be visiting glacier region” says Marcel Fekkes, a local business man and community spokesperson. The weather has been so good that the town is really buzzing and people coming to see the glacier are having outstanding experiences” he said.

The Glacier Region attracts over 1 million tourists annually with January/February the peak months for visiting tourists. All of the town’s tourist facilities are operational and no services are reduced, however with the good weather set to continue towns folk have been asked to be responsible with water use and use common sense water conservation measures.

Not all the residents and businesses of Franz Josef are affected – as places on either side of the main settlement have their own water supplies that are not affected by the current restrictions.

“It is business as usual” says Marcel “and we look forward to welcoming thousands more tourists to town over the coming months.”
