Water is Precious but not scarce on the West coast

Water is Precious but not scarce on the West coast

Westland District Council reassures residents on town water supplies in Westland that water is precious but not scarce.

Westland District Council will always warn residents if levels in the reservoir fall below a certain level.

Franz Josef residents were warned to conserve water due to low reservoir levels but unfortunately use outstripped the resource. Water supply was restored to Franz Josef very quickly and Council has plans in place for many and varied circumstances.

Franz Josef is open for business and fully resourced for services. Glacier Country is experiencing one of the best summers ever. Westland District Council looks forward to welcoming thousands more tourists to Glacier Country over the coming months.

Mr Vivek Goel, Group Manager Assets and Operations says "The situation could have arisen and resulted in similar problem if there was a water main leak or a burst. In this case the water was back on within 90 minutes. We have now confirmed reports that parts of the town and businesses had water at all times. Not all residents and businesses of Franz Josef were affected. Places on either side of the main settlement have their own supplies that are not affected by current restrictions. The situation isn't ideal but it isn't critical."

Some helpful tips on how to conserve your water:

• Only use the washing machine or dishwasher when full i.e. no half washes

• Place a bucket under the shower while waiting for the water to warm up. This water can then be used to water plants.

• Don't leave taps running i.e. when brushing teeth

• Have a shower instead of a bath where applicable

• Fix any internal water leaks and dripping taps

Any water leaks should be reported to the Westland District Council immediately on 03 756 9010.
