Applications open for Mayor’s Welfare Earthquake Relief Fund

The Christchurch City Council is calling for residents who have been doing it tough since the earthquakes to put forward their application for the Mayor’s Welfare Earthquake Relief Fund.

Mayor Bob Parker says this particular fund has been set up to provide assistance to individuals and families who are Christchurch residents, experiencing financial difficulties from the earthquakes.

“Anyone can apply, there is no personal income threshold for eligibility and funding can be granted up to $2500 per application. I encourage people to make the most of this opportunity and the chance to get a bit of financial help to ease them into the new year.”

All applications must be earthquake related and the applicant must be living in Christchurch. Applicants can receive assistance once from the fund.

A Sub-Committee currently chaired by Councillor Helen Broughton with representatives from Christchurch Methodist Mission, Pacific Island Evaluation & Canterbury Age Concern will assess the applications for funding.

This fund is separate from the Mayor's Welfare Charitable Trust Fund and the Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund.

No Urewera Four Retrial

The "Urewera Four", Tame Iti, Rangi Kemara, Urs Signer and Emily Bailey, will not face retrial. In March the four remaining defendants in the Urewera case were found guilty of possessing firearms but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the Section 98a charges of ‘Participation in an Organised Criminal Group. They were to be sentenced on the firearms offences later this month, however following the decision by the Solicitor General not to pursue a re-trial two of the defendants have now applied to have the firearms charges overturned.
