Kapiti Police investigating suspicious behaviour in Waikanae

Kapiti Police are concerned about some suspicious behaviour in and around Waikanae in recent days and are asking the community to be vigilant.

Waikanae Community Constable Brett Polglase says Police have received three reports of a man in a white car approaching children and young people over the past three weeks.

The man is described as European, aged in his 40's, around six foot tall of thin build with dark curly hair and round glasses. The vehicle is described as a white four door saloon, possibly a Toyota Corolla.

"Whilst we do not want to alarm parents and caregivers, we do want to identify and speak to this person and would like to hear from anyone who may have seen this vehicle or this man in the central Waikanae and beach areas in recent times."

Constable Polglase says these incidents reported to Police are a timely reminder for parents and caregivers to discuss with their children how they should keep themselves safe.

"Whilst it is not very common for children or young people to be approached by a stranger acting suspiciously or trying to offer a ride, children should know what to do in this situation. That means calling out for help and making sure Police are notified as soon as possible."

Constable Polglase says Police have spoken to local school principals in Waikanae to make them aware of these recent incidents, in an effort to inform parents and reaffirm safety messages with students.

No Urewera Four Retrial

The "Urewera Four", Tame Iti, Rangi Kemara, Urs Signer and Emily Bailey, will not face retrial. In March the four remaining defendants in the Urewera case were found guilty of possessing firearms but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the Section 98a charges of ‘Participation in an Organised Criminal Group. They were to be sentenced on the firearms offences later this month, however following the decision by the Solicitor General not to pursue a re-trial two of the defendants have now applied to have the firearms charges overturned.
